CEO Group Praises Appointment of Carlos Gutierrez as Secretary of Commerce
The members of the American Business Conference (ABC), CEOs of fast-growing midsize American companies, today praised President Bush's appointment of Carlos Gutierrez as the new Secretary of Commerce.
Commenting on the choice of Mr. Gutierrez, John Endean, ABC's president, said:
"Our CEO-members were pleased that President Bush moved both wisely and quickly to name a new Commerce Secretary. At a time of considerable challenges for the American economy, it was crucial to get someone on board to replace Don Evans as soon as possible. In turning to Mr. Gutierrez, the President has selected a man of deep experience, undoubted integrity, and first-rate intellectual ability. ABC members are gratified that Mr. Gutierrez has responded positively to the President's call.
A business leader of distinction, Mr. Gutierrez's personal journey from modest means to the leadership of one of this country's great corporations illustrates the upward mobility available to Americans seeking success. Cynics may discount the Horatio Alger ideal, but Mr. Gutierrez demonstrates that that ideal still stands as one of the distinguishing characteristics of our country.
